When your Nest products know if you’re home or away, they can do the right thing, automatically. Start by opening up the Nest app on your phone and tapping on the settings gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen. However, in order for Home/Away Assist to use the sensor portion, Auto-Away must be enabled, so you could look at Auto-Away as being a part of the Home/Away Assist feature. Neither has to be enabled for the other to work, but if you want your Nest to use both the GPS and the motion sensor, you’ll want to turn both on. When you leave for work, you likely turn down your thermostat before you head out the door to save energy. But the Nest Thermostat can automatically do that for you, by detecting when you’re away and when you come home.
For example, it can turn on your Nest Cam to help you keep an eye on things when you leave home, and turn it off when you’re home and don’t need it. As we went into detail with in our original Google Nest Cam review, the Home app still feels disorganized and less-than-predictable when it comes to various settings and options for these cameras. When the next screen appears, drag the map to move the pin on top of your house. You can tap on the mountain icon in the bottom-right corner to get an overhead satellite view. The biggest difference, though, is that Auto-Away is exclusive to the Nest Thermostat, while Home/Away Assist is available on all of Nest’s products .
Tips to protect your home this winter
Keep in mind that cameras aren’t switched by all the same triggers as other Nest products. Cameras are only switched by your phone’s location or if you manually change your home’s mode to Home or Away. Family Accounts provides a critical piece of the puzzle. When family members opt in, it lets Home/Away Assist use data from their phones – Android or iOS. So Home/Away Assist will switch to Away only if everyone is out. And it won’t turn down the heat if someone is in a room not visible to any activity sensors.

If you have an existing Nest Account and wish to use this feature, it's recommended that you migrate to a Google Account. If you switch off your thermostat from helping with Home/Away Assist, but use phone location, your Nest products will only switch their behavior when the Nest service determines that a phone is in your home. Select a Nest product, then tap the switch to enable or disable its participation in Home/Away Assist. You can also turn off phone location in your phone’s main settings menu, but this will not only affect the accuracy of Home/Away Assist, it may change how other apps on your phone work, too. With a feature called Home/Away Assist, the Nest Thermostat can use its built-in sensor, as well as the GPS location from your phone, to automatically determine whether you’re home or away.
Home & Away Routines for Nest app users
For me, this location was about 600 ft away from where I pinned my Nest location. This is what prompted me to check out the GPS Keeper app. Under “Use Away temperatures”, you can hold and drag on the two dots to set your minimum and maximum comfort temperatures.

By combining sensor data, algorithms and multiple phones, we think we’ve nailed it. You will have to be sure to start the app listed below every time you restart your phone. Learn how presence sensing works and how to check and delete your presence history data.
Change which Nest products help determine if someone is home
Google Pixel Watch Ben's smartwatch of choice with his phone is the Google Pixel Watch. Starting with the real root cause of all of these frustrations, the Google Home app remains a mess for Nest users. The experience is clearly what Google wants to use going forward, but it pales in comparison to what the Google Nest built up over several years.

Sound Check will always try to run when nobody is home so it won’t disturb you. So there is no option to change it to run while you’re at home, but you can disable Sound Check completely. Tap Eco Temperatures at the bottom of the menu if you want to change the Eco Temperatures that your thermostat will try to maintain when you’re gone.
You share it with others – your spouse, roommates, parents. Once you get in the habit of having GPS keeper on all the time, disable notifications to clear up the notification bar in Android. You must start GPS keeper every time you restart your phone to achieve the desired effects. Craig Lloyd is a smarthome expert with nearly ten years of professional writing experience. And snow this week, experts are reminding those facing winter storm warnings to stay off the roads and adequately prepare their homes in case of cold temperatures, snow and power outages. But still, it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room. All of these products are under the same brand, and some of them are still sold to this day. Personally, I can’t get quite as mad at this one. While I do want my older Nest products to work in the same app as the new one, there are some obvious security and functional bits that would take time to get right with that process.
Bubble wrap can also be used to insulate any windows that won't be opened during winter. And still, in those 11 months, these core problems have not been fixed. Really, outside of the tweak to event-based history, Google hasn’t made any meaningful changes to the complaints long-time Nest users have had with the revamped experience.

Geofencing alone can get it wrong – turn the lights off when someone’s home. With presence determined by phone location, Home & Away Routines can automatically turn your Nest cameras and doorbells on and off. You can automate home devices and take care of everyday tasks with Home & Away Routines in the Google Home app. For example, you can set up an Away Routine so that your lights turn off automatically after you leave home. If you use Nest devices and services, this feature is only available if you use them with a Google Account.
